Active Travel bike facilities to start

Construction on two facilities planned to enhance the city’s Active Travel shared pathway network in central Wagga Wagga is due to start at the end of October.

Wagga Wagga City Council recently awarded the contract for the design and construction of the two end of trip facilities to be located close to the CBD.

They will be constructed at the Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre in Morgan Street and adjacent to the Visitor Information Centre southern boundary in Tarcutta Street.

Council awarded the $297k project to Ladex Construction Group at its 29 June Ordinary Council Meeting.

Project Manager Rupesh Shah said the new facilities will add to the Active Travel network and provide more benefits to the community.

“The facilities will support people who cycle to work rather than driving or taking public transport and will encourage community to use non-motorised transport, promote a healthy, more active community and reduce reliance on cars,” Mr Shah said.

The end of trip facilities include toilet and shower area, lighting, wall mounted bike racks, enclosed bike lockers, bicycle maintenance station, e-bike charging stations and water drinking station. The lockable facility will have electronic swipe card access.

CCTV will also be installed in the area to enhance security.

Meanwhile, construction of a new footpath will continue along Kooringal Road between Lake Albert Road and Vincent Road over the next four weeks.

This will involve removing the existing footpath before laying new road base and an asphalt seal.

The footpath along this section of the Active Travel route will remain open to the public, however pedestrians will be escorted around the work area by traffic controllers while works are underway.

The section of footpath along Red Hill Road (Lake Albert Road to Tamar Drive) will have a temporary seal placed on it before a final seal is applied in the next few weeks. It will remain open to the public in the interim.
