Fitzmaurice Street trees light up for Prostate Cancer Month

Published: 02 Sep 2024 2:39pm

The street trees in Fitzmaurice Street are currently illuminated in blue for the month of September as a way for Council to assist in the promotion of International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Blue is the designated colour for prostate cancer awareness, symbolising hope, support, and solidarity for those affected by the disease.

Prostate cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia.

Wagga Wagga’s Prostate Cancer Social Support Group Leader Mike Murray encourages all men over 50 years of age, or 40 years if they have a family history of prostate cancer, to talk to their GP about testing for prostate cancer as part of their regular health check-up.

“I hope the blue-lit trees raise awareness of the disease and highlight the importance of prostate cancer screening and early detection,” Mr Murray said.

Council’s Manager Community Services Madeleine Scully said the scheduled temporary lighting display helps raise the profile of important local, state and national community awareness campaigns.
