Our green bins are giving back to the community

Wagga Wagga City Council is inviting residents to collect free compost made from their own food and garden waste.
The community giveaway will take place at Gregadoo Waste Management Centre from Thursday 29 May to Monday 9 June, while stocks last.
Since the introduction of the kerbside FOGO service in 2018, the green lid bin has played a vital role in diverting food waste and organic material from landfill.
Each year, approximately 12,500 tonnes of green lid bin waste are collected from households across the Local Government Area and processed into high-quality compost.
Council’s Waste Facilities Manager Andrea Baldwin said the compost giveaway is a way to connect residents with the end product of their waste-sorting efforts.
“This is about closing the loop; residents contribute to the FOGO system every week, and now they have an opportunity to see, and use, the results of their contribution,” Ms Baldwin said.
“We understand the recent changes to what can go in the green lid bin may take some adjustment, but this giveaway is a reminder that your efforts are making a real difference.”
The compost is produced by EPA licensed commercial composting operator Wormtech, which has refined its processing methods since 2016.
The product is made locally from food and garden organics collected through the FOGO system.
A stockpile of mature, nutrient-rich compost is now ready for distribution to the community. Residents are invited to collect the product at the Gregadoo Waste Management Centre.
