Help your city shine at Clean Up Australia Day – Sunday 1 March - 26 February 2015
Wagga Wagga City Council and the Wagga Wagga Tidy Town Committee will be targeting Wiradjuri Reserve as part of Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 1 March.
The community clean up activity is just one of 34 sites registered across the three Clean Up events – Business, School and Community.
“Clean Up Australia Day is a great community event that brings together families, environmental groups, community organisations and individuals for a common cause – a cleaner environment,” Environmental Education Officer Alice Kent said.
“Wagga Wagga City Council proudly supports this great national event that aims to reduce litter in the environment to create healthy, natural areas for everyone in the community to enjoy.”
SITA Environmental Solutions and Cleanaway have generously donated skip bins for this year’s community clean up.
In 2014, an estimated 572,400 volunteers removed 15,700 tonnes of rubbish at 7140 sites right across the country and Ms Kent is encouraging the community to get involved this year.
As part of Business Clean Up Australia Day on 24 February, Council staff tidied up more than two tonnes of rubbish at Rodhams Road, Uranquinty.
Staff got a surprise when they discovered asbestos during the clean up, while dumped garden waste was also a concern as it can lead to the spread of weeds in the environment.
“It’s sad that some people choose to treat our community as a dumping ground, but it’s amazing to see residents give up their time year after year to take part in Clean Up Australia Day and help make our city shine.”
