Historic Fitzmaurice Street ready for upgrade - 16 February 2015

Night works will begin on Fitzmaurice Street from Sunday 22 February, with sections of the road closed from 7pm to 6am.

The street will be reopened to through traffic each morning and detours will be as marked.

Council’s Director Infrastructure Services Heinz Kausche said night works will minimise disruption and inconvenience to businesses and residents.

“This section has not been resurfaced for more than 30 years,” Mr Kausche said.

“Due to its deteriorating condition, Council has identified this section of Fitzmaurice Street for the 2015 Asphalt Program.

“Works will involve profiling and removing the existing material, and reinstating with asphalt pavement, finished with a fine asphalt wearing surface.

“The result will be a smooth, durable, robust and aesthetically pleasing surface that will service the growing city of Wagga for the next 30 years.”

Since its formation in the mid-1800s, Fitzmaurice Street has been reconstructed multiple times to service the needs of a growing city.

Initially a gravel track constructed for horse and cart use, Fitzmaurice Street has developed over 160 years into a thick asphalt integrated pavement that services more than 5000 vehicles per day.

The condition of the Fitzmaurice Street road surface between the Lagoon and Gurwood Street has slowly been deteriorating, with planned works to bring the historic road into the future.

Works are expected to last one week, weather permitting. Council staff will minimise the length of road closed where possible, with regular updates about changing detours to be posted at www.wagga.nsw.gov.au/roadclosures.

Timeframes are subject to change depending on site conditions, contractor availability, weather and progress of the project.
