Wagga Wagga ready to celebrate Australia Day - 22 January 2015

It will be a jam-packed long weekend of fun and celebration when the Wagga Wagga community comes together to mark Australia Day.

Wagga Wagga City Council Event Coordinator, Karly Pieper, said there will be something for everyone over the three days.

“Australia Day is a time to celebrate our nation and our city; and to recognise those people who help make Wagga great,” Ms Pieper said.

“The Australia Day Awards give us the chance to honour the often unsung heroes of our community.”

The awards are just one part of what is sure to be a fun-filled weekend, which begins with a picnic at the Oasis on Saturday 24 January and ends with more celebrations on Australia Day itself.

The awards ceremony and concert will be held at the Civic Theatre, with local talent from across the city to entertain the crowd.

“The concert will feature performances by the Australian Army Band Kapooka's Rock Band, Mount Austin High School Hip Hop Dancers, the National Anthem Competition finalists, Dale Allison and Hayley Potts,” Ms Pieper said.

“Sunday will also be a huge day of celebrations, starting with Markets in the Park from 9am and ending with the Beyond Bank Movies in the Park from 6.30pm.”

The Wagga Waggafest People’s Choice award will also be announced at Movies in the Park. Along with winning film, a collection of the best of Waggafest will be shown.

The Beyond Bank Movies in the Park will also feature Happy Feet 2, which is one of many films Wagga’s Australia Day Ambassador Damian Candusso, an international multi-award winning Sound Designer, has worked on.

Rounding out the long weekend will be the 2WG Australia Day Breakfast, Citizenship Ceremony and the Star FM talent quest on 26 January.
