Civic Centre reopened following evacuation - 2 June 2015

As a result of a credible threat made against Wagga Wagga City Council, all members of the public and staff were evacuated from the Civic Centre as a precaution this morning.

A parcel opened by Council staff was found to contain white powder and following the discovery, Council’s emergency management procedures were put into place.

Emergency services were contacted and attended the scene, with the Civic Centre evacuated at about 9.45am.

“The impacted staff were isolated as a precaution and their welfare is our top priority,” General Manager Phil Pinyon said.

“I’d like to praise all staff and members of the community for their prompt response to this incident. I would also like to thank all emergency services personnel involved for their efforts this morning.”

The Civic Centre was reopened just after 11am and NSW Police are currently investigating the matter.

Council has been advised that all mail received today will be stored by authorities until testing is complete, which will result in delays in processing mail. For any urgent enquiries, contact Customer Service on 1300 292 442.
