Johnston Street to be closed for works

Johnston Street between Trail and Simmons streets will be closed from Tuesday 27 October for the first stage of works that will see the kerb reconstructed and the street trees on the north side of Johnston Street renewed.

The existing trees have reached the end of their useful life and are due for replacement.

Essential Energy vegetation contractors are scheduled to remove the canopies from the trees on the north side of Johnston Street, which will be closed to through traffic between Trail and Simmons Street with detours posted.

Works will be undertaken between 7am and 6pm. The anticipated duration of work is approximately two days, weather permitting, at which time the road will be fully reopened to through traffic.

Additional care should be taken when entering and exiting your property due to the changed traffic conditions. Traffic control staff will be onsite to facilitate local access for residents and commercial premises.

The works will see the removal of all limbs within close proximity to the overhead power lines, which will then permit Council contractors to remove the remainder of the tree at a later date to be advised.

Following the tree removal works, the existing kerb will be removed and reconstructed for the length of the street from Trail to Simmons Street. These works are expected to start in early November and take three weeks to complete.

Timeframes for this project may be subject to change and are dependent on weather conditions.

The street trees will be replaced in winter 2016 with Chinese Elms as part of the Street Tree Renewal Program.
