Can you help solve a monumental mystery?

Volunteers are hoping someone might know something about the history behind a large monument in the Wagga Wagga Monumental Cemetery.
Believed to have been erected in the late 1870’s, the sandstone monument stands tall in the middle of the cemetery surrounded by a white panel fence, but all the markings have worn away.
Wagga Wagga City Council’s Director Commercial Operations Caroline Angel is urging anyone with information to come forward.
“The work that these volunteers do is invaluable to the community and without them so much of our history could be lost,” she said.
“Because of the size of the monument we think it may have been erected for someone that was wealthy and prominent.
“The other clue is the six panels along the fence surrounding it that likely represents six people, which means there is a possibility a family could be interned there.”
If anyone has information about the monument or any of the other graves in the Monumental Cemetery they are urged to call Council on 1300 292 442.
Members of the public can access the information about graves that have been documented by contacting the Wagga Wagga City Library.
