Night works to upgrade popular city intersection

A new road surface is coming to the intersection of Bourke Street and Fernleigh Road.

Machinery will remove the top 225mm of roadway at the intersection during night works, starting Monday, 5 June.

City of Wagga Wagga Operations Manager Stephen Jewell said the works will help prevent further damage and extend the life of the roadway at the high-traffic intersection.

“The pavement at the intersection is showing signs of failures, with extensive cracking and poor ride surface. These night works are being carried out before widespread failures begin to manifest,” Mr Jewell said.

“Deep asphalt pavement works is the best fit for this road due to the high daily volume of traffic use through the intersection.

“While the works are expected to cost about $430,000, this kind of works will have a life of up to 40 years, providing value for money over a pavement rehabilitation and shallower asphalt layers, which will have a life of only about 25 years.”

The works are expected to take five nights to complete, weather permitting, with the road closed and detours in place for motorists from 7pm to 6am each shift.

“Night works are the best for these asphalt renewal works to help minimise disruptions to road users. The colder night conditions will help reduce the temperature of the new asphalt, which is transported from the Bomen plant at a temperature of 170 degrees Celsius, so the road can be reopened in time for traffic the next morning,” Mr Jewell said.

“We are also mindful of residents who live in the immediate vicinity of the intersection and made sure they have been notified well before the works.

“We thank all residents for their cooperation during the five nights these works are carried out.”

This project follows on from other major road projects recently completed by the City of Wagga Wagga, including asphalt works on Tarcutta Street in March 2016 and Glenfield Road overpass in December 2016, and, a full road resealing schedule including sections of 17 roads completed during the 2016/2017 summer months.
