A quantity of asbestos material has been uncovered within building rubble on a City of Wagga Wagga worksite today.

Contractors working on behalf of City of Wagga Wagga made the discovery at Forest Hill Oval, corner of Elizabeth and Dunn avenues, while carrying out excavation works as part of an upgrade at the park.

Work in the location ceased on discovery of the material. A licensed asbestos removal contractor has been engaged to make the site safe prior to the removal and disposal of the material.

The removal works will determine the extent of the contamination and the time it will take to remediate the site.

The City of Wagga Wagga is in the process of trying to determine a possible source of the contamination.
