Cycling complex moving ahead

Wagga Wagga City Council’s vision to construct the best Multisport Cycling Complex in NSW is moving ahead, with a formal Expression of Interest released this week.

Following months of planning, design and community consultation, the Council has this week advertised an Expression of Interest, the next phase in the project’s development.

Director Commercial Operations, Caroline Angel said Council is working closely with stakeholders, including the city’s five cycling groups, to deliver a project that meets the sporting needs of the community as well as incorporating the cultural importance of the site into the proposed complex.

“Consultation with local First Nations women will ensure the development is respectful and representative of Pomingalarna’s significance to Wiradjuri cultural heritage,” she said. “A Cultural Heritage Survey is underway, which will thoroughly investigate the cultural significance of the site.

“The multisport complex will cater to cycling clubs, community members – both cyclists and non-cyclists - in a safe environment away from suburban and main road traffic,” she said.

The complex will feature a criterium track, BMX track, jump tracks and pump tracks, a cycling education area, a velodrome, and supporting infrastructure.

Funding for the $9.2M Wagga Wagga Multisport Cycling Complex comprises a State Government contribution of $6.92M, with Wagga Wagga City Council contributing $2.3M.

The project is scheduled for completion in June 2021.
