Excitement is building across Wagga Wagga and surrounding region for the upcoming round 5 National Rugby League (NRL) blockbuster between the Canberra Raiders and Melbourne Storm at McDonalds Park on Saturday 9 April 2022.

Member of the Legislative Council Wes Fang said the NRL clash is being backed by the NSW Government’s Regional Events Acceleration Fund which supports events that boost local economies.

“I’m delighted that the $100,000 grant from the Regional Events Acceleration Fund has made it possible for Wagga Wagga to host such an iconic match between the Canberra Raiders and Melbourne Storm,” Mr Fang said.

“We know hosting major events in regional areas attracts a large number of visitors and they will spend money in local shops, grab a bite to eat at a local restaurant or cafĂ©, boosting regional businesses and economies.

“Since its inception, the Regional Events Acceleration Fund has supported more than 80 events and attracted more than one million visitors to the regions.”

The NSW Government’s Regional Events Acceleration Fund supports the social and economic recovery of regional communities who have been affected by floods, droughts, bushfires and the pandemic.

“The funding we’ve received from the NSW Government plays an important role in bringing great events like next month’s NRL match to Wagga Wagga,” Cr Tout said.

“We’re looking forward to seeing the Raiders return for their third game in four years and to welcoming the Melbourne Storm to our city.

“The event is a fantastic opportunity to bring visitors from across the region and beyond to our city, which will create a positive impact on the local economy and local business owners.
