Registrations are still open for anyone wanting to stand for their local council at the NSW Local Government elections on Saturday 14 September.
Wagga Wagga City Council’s Manager Corporate Government and Performance David Galloway said anyone passionate about their community should consider putting up their hand.
“There are plenty or resources out there for anyone interested in learning what’s involved in being a councillor,” Mr Galloway said.
“A free briefing session held last week was a great success, with potential candidates really engaged.
“They had a chance to talk with Office of Local Government NSW facilitator Leanne Barnes, who has had experience as a councillor and mayor, as well as Wagga Wagga councillors Michael Henderson and Tim Koschel.”
Mr Galloway said anyone considering standing for council should attend a Council meeting to see first-hand how it actually works.
“There are also several webinars being held by the NSW Electoral Commission that will help explain subjects like nominating, electoral material compliance and candidate workers and scrutineers,” Mr Galloway said.
“Other things potential candidates can do include reading Council’s business papers and visiting Wagga Wagga City Council’s website for becoming a councillor.”
