Wagga Wagga City Council this week said a big “thank you” to the many volunteers who undertake vital work on behalf of Council.
A special afternoon tea for Council’s volunteers was held at the Civic Centre on Wednesday 22 May 2024 as part of National Volunteer Week, from 20-26 May 2024.
The theme of this year’s National Volunteer Week 2024 is “Something for Everyone”, which is certainly the case when it comes to volunteer opportunities within Council.
Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga Councillor Dallas Tout said the afternoon tea was an opportunity to highlight the important role of volunteers.
“We were delighted to be able to bring together Council’s volunteers and show them our appreciation for all that they do for Council and the Wagga Wagga community,” Cr Tout said.
“The contributions they make by giving their time, energy and commitment, are essential to the successful provision of much-needed services and programs across the local government area.
“They are a vital part of the fabric of Council’s day-to-day operations across a wide variety of organisational areas, events and initiatives all year round.
“Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to the community, learn new skills, make new friends, and have fun.”
The diverse range of positions and roles offers people a unique and rewarding chance to get involved in some amazing programs and events.
Council has approved 35 new volunteers this year, in diverse areas such as the Zoo and Aviary, Botanic Gardens, Glenfield Road Animal Shelter, Art Gallery, as well as the Library and the Language Café.
There have been several instances where volunteers within our Parks and Gardens area have gone on to apply for and secure employment within Council.
