End of holiday hours for Zoo & Aviary

Published: 03 Feb 2025 9:27am

After a long, hot summer, the school holidays are coming to an end.

This means Wagga Wagga Zoo & Aviary’s holiday opening hours – seven days a week from 9am to 4pm – are also coming to an end.

From Monday 3 February, the Zoo & Aviary will return to its regular opening hours: Thursday to Monday, 9am-4pm.

Zoo Curator Wendy McNamara said the school holidays had been very successful for the zoo.

“The mornings were very busy, with the zoo’s walking tour – which involves a lot of animal interaction – being particularly popular,” Ms McNamara said.

“But in summer the afternoons can be very hot and things can become quiet.

“And when it’s hot, many of the animal enclosures have water features or sprinklers to help animals keep cool.

“We also have access to an ice-maker; the ice is great for the animals to play with, and of course helps keep them cool as well.”

FOR THE BIRDS: To help keep the birds cool during the hottest days, the enclosures have sprinklers installed.

Ms McNamara said although the Zoo & Aviary was closed to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during term time, it didn’t mean things weren’t happening.

“That time’s especially useful for renovating and upgrading the enclosures and other infrastructure.

“It’s also when we run a lot of the private tours, for example with school groups.”
