Tips on Council’s free hard waste collection service

Published: 20 May 2022 11:08am

Wagga Wagga City Council is encouraging residents to take advantage of Council’s free hard waste collection service to dispose of up to two cubic metres of hard waste.

Gregadoo Waste Management Centre Support Officer Tammie Cook said the hard waste collection service was an easy way for residents to part with unwanted goods.

“If you’ve cleaned out your shed or garage, or just purchased a new couch, Council can help you clear out what you don’t need,” Ms Cook said.

“If you have things that are still in good condition, you can bring them to the tip shop, so someone else will be able to use them. If they’re no longer usable, our hard waste collection is ideal.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re renting or you’re an owner; if you have Council-issued bins that are emptied every week or fortnight, you're eligible for one free hard waste collection per year.”

Residents can book a free hard waste collection online at wagga.nsw.gov.au/waste or by calling Council’s waste contractor JJ Richards on (02) 5942 6150.

“When you book, you’ll be given a choice of one of three weeks,” Ms Cook said.

“You choose which week suits you best, then on the Sunday of your collection week, just put your items in a neat pile on the nature strip outside your house or unit. During that week we’ll come to your property and collect up to two cubic metres of hard waste for you.”

HARD WASTE COLLECTION: Council will collect up to two cubic metres of hard waste per property each year.

Council has seen a recent rise in residents adding their items to other people’s previously booked hard waste collection piles.

“We only accept up to two cubic metres of hard waste per property,” Ms Cook said.

“By adding your things to someone else’s pile, you’re potentially taking them over the limit, meaning we won’t be able to collect the things that were originally booked for collection.

“We also only accept certain things in our hard waste collection; items like mattresses, old fridges and so on need to be taken to the tip.

“When you book your hard waste collection online, you’ll be able to read the list of what’s accepted, what isn’t, and where to take the things that don’t apply for the hard waste collection service.

“If you’re adding things onto someone else’s pile that aren’t accepted, you’re causing issues for that person.

“So if you see someone else has put items out the front of their house, please use it as a reminder to book your own hard waste collection, rather than add to their pile. Booking your own collection is free and you won’t have to carry anything further than your own nature strip.”
