A purple June to Light Up for Lipoedema

Published: 30 May 2025 12:10pm

The trees along Fitzmaurice Street will be lit up purple during the month of June for Light Up for Lipoedema - a national campaign for Lipoedema Awareness Month.

Light Up for Lipoedema shines a spotlight on the often unknown or misunderstood condition of lipoedema which causes a painful build-up of diseased fat in the legs and arms and can spread to other areas of the body.

It impacts an estimated 11 per cent of women and is frequently misdiagnosed by medical practitioners as being overweight, leaving most sufferers unaware of their condition.

Lipoedema tends to worsen during hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, and cannot be dieted or exercised away as the symptoms worsen and can interfere with walking and other daily activities,

The weight gain associated with lipoedema can also have an impact on the mental health of sufferers who are unaware of their condition.

Manager Community Services Madeleine Scully said that Council’s lighting awareness campaign helps to promote information and support services that are available for women who think they might be affected by lipoedema.

“With increased visibility comes increased awareness, and with that, better understanding, with hopefully earlier diagnosis and improved outcomes”, Ms Scully said.

Lipoedema Australia hopes the national Light up for Lipoedema campaign also serves as a beacon of hope, strength, and solidarity, reminding women affected by lipoedema that they are not alone.

Their website provides comprehensive information and support about the disease: lipoedema.org.au

Community organisations seeking to promote their upcoming health and community campaigns with temporary lighting of the trees in Fitzmaurice Street are encouraged to book their requests.
